New Study Estimates 4 Million Deaths from Household Cooking Smoke Each Year

Household air pollution from cooking with solid fuels kills 4 million people annually, according to new global burden of disease estimates published in The Lancet today. Millions more are sickened from lung cancer and disease, child lower respiratory infections, cardiovascular disease, and cataracts associated with household air pollution (HAP). The results demonstrate the continued impact of HAP on child survival and life-expectancy, and underscore the link between HAP and noncommunicable diseases. Read more

Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves Announces More Than $2 Million in Funds to Support Entrepreneurs, Innovation in the Sector

The Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves announced today more than $2 million in funds to support entrepreneurs and innovation in the clean cooking sector. The creation of the Spark Fund and the Pilot Innovation Fund are part of the Alliance’s strategic plan to increase the level of resources, grants, and investment in the sector on par with comparable global development challenges. Each day, almost 3 billion people burn solid fuels for cooking. Two million deaths result annually due to the harmful smoke emitted from burning fuels such as wood and coal – the fifth largest health risk in developing countries. Read more
